Depending on your operating system, the steps to flushing a DNS cache may vary. The tutorial below will show you how to do it on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X.

How to Flush DNS DNS Cache in Microsoft Windows XP, 7, Vista, 8, 8.1 or 10

With Windows, the process to flush your DNS cache will be the same for most versions. Keep in mind that you need to use the Run as administrator option when executing the command prompt to access all system security permissions:

  1. Use the Windows + R shortcut to open the Run window.
  2. Type cmd to open Windows Command Prompt.
  3. Type the following command and hit Enter:
ipconfig /flushdns
  1. Windows will automatically clear your DNS cache files and reset the DNS resolver cache. If the process is successful, you’ll see the following confirmation message in your Command Prompt console:

How to Flush DNS Cache in macOS 11 Big Sur, 12 Monterey, and Older Versions

With macOS, make sure to run the correct flush DNS command based on your current OS version. Therefore, the first step is to check your macOS version by clicking on the Apple icon -> About This Mac.

Next, open the command terminal window by pressing the F4 key and entering terminal in the Spotlight search field. Then, insert the command specific to your macOS version and press Enter. If prompted, insert your admin password and click Enter key again to clear your DNS cache.

Here are the specific commands for each version:

macOS 11 Big Sur or 12 Monterey:

sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder

macOS 10.11 El Capitan, 10.12 Sierra, 10.13 High Sierra, 10.14 Mojave, or 10.15 Catalina:

sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder

macOS 10.10 Yosemite:

sudo discoveryutil udnsflushcaches

macOS 10.7 Lion, 10.8 Mountain Lion, or 10.9 Mavericks:

sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder

macOS 10.6 Snow Leopard:

sudo dscacheutil -flushcache

macOS 10.5 Leopard:

How to Flush DNS Cache in Linux

Unlike Windows and macOS, Ubuntu does not cache DNS records by default. If you manually install a DNS service, you will need to flush the DNS cache on your computer.

To clear your DNS cache using Linux, press Ctrl + Alt + T keys together to open the Terminal application.

In the terminal window, enter the required command based on the service your Linux system is running. Here are the commands for Name Service Cache Daemon (nscd) and systemd.
