How to buy a domain name in 5 steps

How to buy a domain name in 5 steps

When you find the perfect domain name, buy it right away so no one else can take it. The process is simple: start by brainstorming ideas, then choose a reliable registrar to search for availability. Once you’ve found your match, complete the purchase, verify your ownership, and secure the domain to keep it protected.

If the domain you want is already taken, the steps are different. Instead of buying it directly, you may need to negotiate with the current owner, use a domain marketplace, or consider alternatives. In this case, learning how to purchase domain names through resale platforms is a great way to secure the name you’re after.

Let’s start with the most common process: buying a new domain name.

1. Brainstorm your domain name

Your domain name is both your web address and a key part of your online identity. It should be unique, easy to remember, and aligned with your brand.

To get started, you can use Hostinger’s AI-powered domain checker tool. It suggests ideas based on your brand description and helps you see which options are available.

After you have a few ideas, the next step is choosing the right domain extension or top-level domain (TLD) – the ending that comes after your name. For example, in Hostinger.com, “Hostinger” is the domain name and “.com” is the extension.

There are different types of domain extensions to choose from:

  • Generic top-level domain (gTLD). Common extensions for general use, like .com, .org, or .net. Newer ones like .xyz, .club, and .online also fall into this group.
  • Country code top-level domain (ccTLD). Two-letter extensions tied to a specific country, such as .us or .uk. Some may have special requirements depending on local rules.
  • Sponsored top-level domain (sTLD). Restricted to certain groups, such as .edu for educational institutions or .gov for government bodies.

When deciding on an extension, think about your website’s purpose. For example, .shop domain is good for ecommerce, while .me or .online work well for personal blogs and portfolios.

2. Choose a reliable domain registrar

A domain registrar is a company responsible for registering and managing domain names. It must also follow the rules set by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the organization that governs domain registrations worldwide.

Different registrars vary in features, pricing, support quality, and security. For example, Hostinger includes free domain privacy protection for eligible TLDs and lets you add extras like email services and web hosting to your plan. This makes registering for a domain simple and cost-effective.

Consider these factors when making your choice:

  • Registration period. Look for domain registrars that offer discounts for longer registration periods.
  • Domain transfers. Check whether your preferred registrar has flexible transfer policies with reasonable fees.
  • Value for money. Some domain registrars offer free WHOIS domain privacy protection, while others waive the domain registration cost for the first year when buying an annual web hosting plan. Make sure you get the most out of your money.
  • Extensions. Since each domain registrar has its own set of extensions, choose the one that supports your preferred domain extension.
  • Ease of use. A good domain registrar should have a clean layout with user-friendly features.
  • Customer support. Pick a domain registrar that offers 24/7 support and a well-maintained knowledge base to help you quickly resolve any issues.
  • Renewal process. Choosing a domain registrar with an auto-renewal feature ensures you won’t lose your domain if you forget to renew it manually.

3. Purchase your domain

After confirming that your preferred domain name is available, it’s time to purchase it.

Here’s how to register a domain name with Hostinger:

  1. After running a domain name search, select Make it yours next to your chosen domain. You can also go with the domain bundle deal to register other TLDs for your domain, preventing misuse by competitors and boosting brand awareness.
  2. On the shopping cart window, pick a registration period then hit Continue. Register your domain for at least two years for the best deal.
  1. Enter your billing address and pick a payment method. Once you’re done, click Submit payment.
  2. The final step is optional: build a website or web app with Hostinger and connect your domain. If you’re not ready, hit Skip.

If the process is successful, you will be redirected to the Domain Overview page. Here, you can manage and customize your domain settings, such as DNS records, domain forwarding, and privacy protection.

4. Verify domain name ownership

The final step is to verify your contact information. Check your inbox for an email from the registry and verify it within 15 days. Failure to do so can result in a temporary domain suspension by the registry.

If the email doesn’t arrive, resend the request from the Domain Overview page as soon as possible. Alternatively, change your contact information before resending the verification email.

Our domain verification guide offers more insights on the whole process and troubleshooting tips. If you need help, contact the Customer Success team anytime via hPanel.

5. Protect your domain

When you register a domain, your contact information becomes publicly available in the WHOIS database, which is designed for transparency. However, this also exposes you to spam, phishing attempts, and other security risks.

Domain privacy protection helps reduce these risks by keeping your personal details hidden. Instead of showing your contact information, your registrar will replace it with their own in the WHOIS database. This way, you get to keep your data private while complying with the ICANN rules.

Most domain registrars charge $10-20/year for WHOIS protection as an add-on. As we mentioned earlier, Hostinger includes this protection for free for eligible TLDs.

To check whether your domain privacy is enabled on Hostinger, head to the Domain Overview page and make sure the Privacy protection toggle is on.

Important! Privacy laws like GDPR keep certain users’ personal information from public WHOIS databases without any additional privacy protection services. After registering your domain, run it through a WHOIS Lookup tool to check whether your information is already protected.

As domain name ownership isn’t permanent, it’s important to renew your domain before it expires. Hostinger offers an auto-renewal feature to eliminate the hassle and risk of manual renewal, which you can enable from the Domain Overview page.

Simply toggle the Auto-renewal option and add your preferred payment method. Doing so protects your domain ownership, prevents downtime, and avoids high redemption fees.

What to consider when buying a domain name

When buying a domain name for a website, go for something short, easy, and memorable. Aim for 6–14 characters and avoid numbers, hyphens, or double letters that can lead to typos. A simple, catchy name makes it easier for visitors to find you again and even recommend your site to others.

Before locking in your choice, make sure it’s legally safe. Learn how to trademark a business name in your country and use databases or tools like Namechk to confirm it’s unique. This quick step will save you from headaches later and keep your brand unique.

Finally, think long-term. Changing your domain later is expensive and can damage visibility and trust. So, pick one that suits your idea now but can grow with you as you expand. Avoid trendy slang or buzzwords that may fade, and stick to something timeless that people can rely on.

How to buy a domain name that is already registered

If your preferred domain name is taken, you have two options: search for alternative top-level domains (TLDs) or make an offer to the current owner.

Here are the steps to buy a registered domain name.

1. Check what the domain is currently used for

Type the domain name into your browser to see if it’s actively in use. If it leads to a live website, the owner probably isn’t looking to sell.

Your best chance to acquire the domain is if it’s a parked domain, meaning it isn’t actively linked to any website. Many domain investors buy these types of domains to resell them for a profit.

2. Find the owner’s contact information

If the domain is available for sale, the next step is to find the domain owner’s contact details. You can use a WHOIS lookup tool to gather information like the domain registrar and its expiration date, which are useful when negotiating the purchase.

If the WHOIS information is protected by domain privacy protection, check the website’s Contact page or footer for an email. If this doesn’t work, your best option is to contact the registrar.

3. Determine the value of the domain

Before sending your proposal and negotiating with the owner, it’s crucial to understand the value of your desired domain name. Without proper research, you risk paying more than the actual market price.

Check prices of similar domains on marketplaces like Flippa and Sedo. Then, decide your maximum offer for the domain.

4. Contact the domain owner

Now, it’s time to get in touch with the owner. The easiest way to do it is to send an email pitch explaining the following details:

  • Who you are.
  • Why you’re writing to them.
  • Which domain you want to purchase.
  • Your initial offer for the domain.

For your first time, it’s best to use a domain broker. They’ll handle the domain purchase process for both parties, ensuring a smooth negotiation and secure transaction.

5. Negotiate the purchase

When negotiating the purchase terms, consider the domain’s price, transfer method, and applicable laws to your region. Before signing any formal contract, consult an attorney to ensure legal compliance.

For payments, we recommend using an Escrow service instead of transferring money directly to the owner. This service verifies your payment and ensures the seller transfers the domain before releasing funds, offering additional protection against scams.

Can I transfer my domain name to Hostinger?

Yes, you can transfer domain names to Hostinger easily. First, unlock your domain with your current registrar, as domains are usually locked by default to prevent unauthorized transfers. Then, purchase the domain transfer service on Hostinger. Prices vary depending on the domain extension and registration period.

Next, obtain the authorization code (EPP code) from your current registrar to complete the transfer. Log in to your Hostinger account, go to Domains → Transfers, and follow the steps to enter the code when prompted.

After submitting the transfer request, check your email for a confirmation message and approve it. The entire process usually takes 5-7 days to complete.

Our article on domain name costs breaks down prices for different extensions, what affects them, and offers tips to help you get the best deal for your website.

How can I get a free .com domain?

There are several ways to get a free .com domain, depending on what you’re looking for. The most common option is getting one with a web hosting plan, usually for the first year. If you’re starting a website, this is a great deal since you get both hosting and a .com domain bundled together.

Another way is through a website builder. This method is similar to the hosting plan option but focuses on those looking for an easy, all-in-one site-building solution. Keep in mind that some builders offer a free domain only with selected plans, so be sure to pick one that includes it.

Lastly, you can secure a domain with an email hosting plan, ideal if you want a professional email. Just check whether your chosen email provider includes a free domain in its plans, as some only offer email aliases or alternate email addresses using the same domain.

Hostinger offers free .com domains with all three services’ annual plans. You can manage your domain, hosting, and website on one platform, avoiding the hassle dealing with multiple providers.

How to buy a domain name permanently

Domain name ownership isn’t permanent. To maintain control of your domain, you’ll need to renew it before it expires.

The longest registration period is 10 years at a time through a one-time domain purchase. If you’re not planning to release your domain anytime soon, make sure you enable auto-renewal. Most registrars offer this feature, which automatically renews your domain before the expiration date.

Auto-renewing your domain keeps you from suffering downtime or, worse, losing ownership by missing the payment deadline. Just make sure your payment details are up to date to avoid any interruptions.

When should I buy a domain name?

It’s a good idea to register your domain name as soon as possible. According to domain name statistics, registrations had reached 368.4 million by early 2025. This means your preferred web address might not be available for long.

Here are some scenarios when you should consider buying a domain:

  • Starting a business. Having your own domain adds credibility and professionalism.
  • Building a personal blog or portfolio. A unique domain helps establish your personal brand and makes your site easier to find.
  • Launching an online store. A custom domain builds trust with customers.
  • Creating a nonprofit website. A domain that resonates with your mission makes your organization appear legitimate and trustworthy.
  • Expanding your brand or idea. If you have a new project or product, owning a domain can help protect your brand and prevent competitors from taking it.

While free domains or subdomains might seem appealing, buying a domain offers more control and professionalism. It gives you the flexibility to build your brand, grow your online presence, and avoid the limitations and ads that often come with free options.

What to do after buying a domain name

Buying a domain is just the first step toward building a long-term online presence. To grow your brand, you’ll need the right tools to turn it into a functional, visible website.

Start by getting a hosting plan that gives your website space online. Next, connect your domain to your hosting so visitors can access your website when they type in your web address. Once that’s done, you can create a professional business email using your domain name. This makes your communication look more trustworthy and credible.

Finally, think about promoting your new website. Share it on social media, optimize it for search engines, and let your audience know about your new online home. Each of these steps helps your site grow into a long-term asset for your business.

If you’re asking yourself, “I bought a domain name, now what?”, these actions are the perfect place to start.
